UMC Children’s Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the state to offer a dedicated Pediatric Sedation Unit, providing specialized sedation services for children prior to procedures and tests performed at the hospital. Our expertly trained Pediatric Sedation team is dedicated to making the experience as relaxing and comforting as possible for children and their families.

What is Sedation?

Your child may have distress or pain during a procedure or test and may not hold still for the procedure to be safely performed. Examples of procedures or tests include MRI, CT scan or lumbar puncture. Sedation involves the administration of medications, usually given as an injection. When using an injection, the sedation is more controlled and predictable. Therefore, your child will likely need a catheter placed in the vein (IV) for the sedation.
